Target Audience

This symposium is directed primarily to medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgical oncologists, researchers and registered oncology nurses interested in new developments for treatment of lung cancer. No specific skill or knowledge other than a basic training in oncology is required for successful participation in this activity. Fellows, nurses and pharmacists are also invited to attend.

Statement of Need/Program Overview

International Congress for Lung Cancer is intended to provide comprehensive updates on biology, diagnosis, screening, and management of lung cancer.  Paradigm shift in the treatment options of non-small-cell lung cancer and small-cell lung cancer will be discussed. This meeting will facilitate interaction among oncologists and researchers interested in development of novel therapeutics for treatment of lung cancer.  In addition to multimodality therapy, adjuvant therapy and surgery, this symposium will present data of most promising emerging agents currently in development for the treatment of lung cancer.  The format will include didactic lectures from known thought leaders, question and answer sessions, and ample opportunity for participant interaction with faculty. In-depth discussion of antiangiogenic agents, inhibitors of EGFR pathways and drugs that target multiple signaling pathways will also be given significant focus.  Emerging data from ongoing clinical research will be presented.

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  1. Describe the current status of state-of-the-art therapies of lung cancer, including chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
  2. Define the current status of multimodality therapy in the treatment of localized and advanced lung cancer.
  3. Cite data from recent clinical trials investigating current strategies to treat small cell lung cancer.
  4. Outline the clinical data supporting the use of EGFR inhibitors in the treatment of lung cancer.
  5. Review agents that target angiogenesis, including the safety profile and efficacy.
  6. Specify the impact of multi-targeted kinase inhibitors in the management of lung cancer.
  7. Describe novel therapeutic agents that potentially improve upon standard chemotherapeutics.
  8. Cite recent data on surgical advances in non-small-cell lung cancer.
  9. Outline recent data from national and international cooperative group clinical trials.
  10. Describe how to apply information from clinical trials in the management of lung cancer.
  11. Define the importance of supportive care in the management of lung cancer.
