Statement of Need/Program Overview
This symposium is intended to provide comprehensive updates on biology, diagnosis, screening, and management of cancer. Paradigm shift in the treatment options for cancer will be discussed. This program will facilitate interaction among oncologists, and researchers interested in development of novel therapeutics for cancer. In addition to multimodality therapy, adjuvant therapy, and targeted therapies, this symposium will present data on pharmacogenomics, and the role of individualized therapy of most promising emerging agents currently in development for the treatment of cancer. The format will include didactic lectures from known thought leaders, question and answer sessions, and ample opportunity for participant interaction with faculty. In-depth discussion of several chemotherapeutic agents at various stages of clinical development for multiple malignancies that target signaling pathways will also be given significant focus. Emerging data from ongoing clinical research will be presented.
Target Audience
This symposium is directed primarily to medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgical oncologists, researchers, pharmacists, registered nurses, and physician assistants interested in new developments for treatment of various malignancies. No specific skill or knowledge other than a basic training in oncology is required for successful participation in this activity. Fellows are also invited to attend
Learning Objectives
- Describe the integration of novel cytotoxic agents into adjuvant or metastatic treatment regimens for breast cancer, including drugs targeting the HER1, HER2 and VEGF pathways, including methods for optimizing patient selection
- Identify the impact of combination therapy for previously untreated or treated non-colorectal gastrointestinal and colorectal cancers
- Cite recent clinical trial data investigating the use of novel regimens in the treatment of leukemia
- Evaluate the novel treatments options for lymphoma
- Identify the role of new therapeutic options for prostate cancer
- Describe the efficacy and toxicity of multi-targeted kinase inhibitors and other novel agents for the treatment of advanced renal cell carcinoma
- Identify the current clinical data in the treatment of ovarian and gynecologic malignancies.
- Recognize the role of novel agent combinations in the treatment of Multiple Myeloma
- Assess the role of novel therapies based on the molecular biology of soft tissue sarcomas
- Cite recent clinical data regarding the use of agents targeting the EGFR and/or VEGF pathways in the treatment of non-small-call lung cancer, including potential patient selection criteria
- Examine the novel genomic targets that are being identified which can potentially be used for patient selection and for the development of new drugs
- Evaluate the current supportive care issues, in the light of new options of treatment with novel anticancer agents
